The Trailblazers battled, but just couldn’t get over the hump.

The University girls basketball team lost 52-40 on the road to Class 3A No. 3 Beech Grove on Thursday in a game that got away from the Trailblazers in the third quarter.

Sophomore Lindsey Syrek led University in scoring with 15, with 10 of those points coming in the second half.

The Hornets flew out to a 15-10 edge after the first quarter and went into halftime with a 21-18 lead. Beech Grove started to put separation on the scoreboard after the intermission, with a 12-0 run that bridged the second and third quarters.

The Hornets made a 3-pointer and a layup on their first two shot attempts of the third, while the Trailblazers turned the ball over on three of their first four possessions. Trailing 29-18, Syrek hit her next two shots to cut the deficit to seven. But a turnover on the Trailblazers next possession was followed by a 3-pointer from Beech Grove’s Katie Giller that stretched the Hornets advantage back to double-digits.

Beech Grove took its largest lead of the night at 36-22. The Hornets led 40-29, when University’s Natalie Nickless buried a 3-pointer that brought the Trailblazers bench to its feet. University was able to cut the deficit to single digits on multiple occasions, but were unable to dig themselves out of the hole.

Natalie Nickless finished second on University with 13 points. Nickless and Syrek were the only two Trailblazers who got to the free throw line. Syrek made 5-of-8, and Nickless connected on 2-of-3. Nickless also made three of the Trailblazers five 3-pointers. Lilly Snyder had seven points, Brooke Andrus had three and Lucy Snyder finished with two.
