SHERIDAN - Four-game losing streaks are always a reason for concern, but the Sheridan girls' basketball team isn't a group easily defined by a single lull.

Opening the year 4-2 and the owners of a 10-game winning streak this season, the Class 2A Blackhawks look primed to challenge for the Sectional 39 championship this week.

Sheridan finished the regular season 17-6 overall and enter the postseason on a momentum-building three-game winning streak, which includes victories against 2A Muncie Burris, 79-25, and 3A Frankfort, 71-61.

The Blackhawks' longest winning streak before this year's 10 occurred in 2011-12 when the program went unbeaten in nine consecutive.

Among its competition in the Taylor Sectional, Sheridan appears to be one of the favorites with the most wins overall, but host Tipton (11-11) and first-round opponent Taylor (11-11) are immediate threats.

Tipton is 5-0 against five of its six sectional competitors. This includes a 54-53 win against Sheridan at home on Jan. 10. The defending sectional champion Blue Devils are 6-5 against their class this year.

Taylor has fared the best against 2A competition with a 7-4 record, but are 3-2 versus the sectional field with two wins over Eastern (Greentown), 58-44 and 43-30, and another against Madison-Grant, 51-50.

When Sheridan and Taylor play Wednesday at 6 p.m., it will signify the first meeting between the two programs since the 2008-09 postseason.

The Blackhawks lost 62-41 in the sectional semifinals. The two also faced off in 2007-08 in the same round with Taylor, once again, pulling out the win 69-52.

This time around, the Blackhawks look to turn the tables with depth and a rising star in sophomore Brittany Welch. The 5-foot-11 shooting guard has averaged nearly 20 points per game for Sheridan.

She has scored 20 points or more on 14 occasions this season and is shooting 48 percent from the field. She posted a season-best 29 points on Nov. 11 against Eastern in a 58-51 victory and has thrived in the team's other two sectional primers this year.

Versus Elwood, she scored 21 points, and even in a narrow defeat to Tipton, Welch led the team with 24 points, including a 4-for-8 performance from 3-point range.

But she is far from alone.

Freshman point guard Audry Reed is averaging 13.8 points per game and a little more than four rebounds a night. Senior forward Payton Fleenor has been strong, providing 5.3 points per game.

Senior Katie Hybarger, a multisport standout, has been key as well. The guard is averaging 5.0 points per game and a team-best 6.8 rebounds.

The crucial average this week, however, will be the team's 59.9 points scored and stingy 38.9 points allowed per game.

Sheridan is 6-2 versus 2A teams this year and chasing its first sectional title in program history.
