The Sheridan girls' basketball team lost a heartbreaker to the Carroll (Flora) Cougers 36-35.

The Blackhawks (4-2) kept it close the whole way and never had to battle back from a large deficit but were just one shot away from leaving with a win.

Brittany Welch put the team on her back, scoring 28 points on 12 of 18 shooting and nabbing five steals. Bu there wasn't enough help from the other Blackhawk players to get the win.

Welch shot 50 percent from 3-point land in addition to shooting 75 percent for two pointers. Overall, she shot 66 percent.

Audrey Reed added four points of her own for the Blackhawks but struggled from the floor only shooting 1 of 8 from the field.

The loss puts the Blackhawks at 0-1 in the Hoosier Heartland Conference. They'll get a chance to even their conference record on Tuesday, Dec. 9 against Clinton Central.

The next game for the Blackhawks will be this Monday, Dec. 8 at 6 p.m. at Fall Creek Academy. The Blackhawks put on a clinic last year as they won 78-6 over the Engineers.
