Senior Brock Kitchel will be a key element for the Blackhawks this season.
SHERIDAN - Few things went right for the Class 2A Sheridan Blackhawks in 2013-14. And when they did, it was so early in the regular season that it was difficult to remember by March.

Opening the year a promising 3-1 with victories against Anderson Prep Academy and Hoosier Heartland, coach Cory Dunn's final season at the helm unraveled as Sheridan dropped 15 consecutive games.

The season ended with a 52-33 opening-round loss to Eastern (Greentown) in sectional.

Dunn, now with HHC rival and defending champion Rossville, is replaced by first-year head coach Chris Schrank, who spent last season coaching junior varsity at Bishop Chatard. The previous six seasons he coached freshman and junior varsity basketball at Union County.

Tasked with righting the ship after a 3-18 season, Schrank will look to bring back a hoops tradition that once netted 13 sectional championships to Larry Hobbs Memorial Gymnasium - with the last in 1983.

Gone is last year's leading scorer Cort Christy, who averaged 18.7 points per game. However, the Blackhawks do return a large group of upperclassmen with four seniors and four juniors.

The primary offensive threat is 6-foot-3 forward Chris Roberts, who scored 10.3 per contest with 7.5 rebounds a night.

Senior Brock Kitchel, who stands 6-0, returns at guard and brings a 10.1 points per game average. Guard Jacob Chesney, a 5-9 guard and football standout at wide receiver, averaged 8.2 points as a sophomore last season.

Elliott Barker, a 6-2 senior forward, adds experience to the frontline as do junior guard Taylor Ly and 5-11 senior Garrett Chesney, who started at quarterback this past season.

Forwards Patrick Weitzel, a 6-0 junior, and Robert Sizemore, a 6-3 newcomer, give coach Schrank additional depth and athleticism to get the Blackhawks back on the right side of the win column in 2014-15.
