ROYAL CENTER - The Sheridan boys' basketball team held an early lead but couldn't keep up with the host Pioneer Panthers down the stretch, falling 58-49 on Saturday night.

The Class 2A Blackhawks dropped to 3-5 on the season, losing their fourth consecutive after opening the year 3-1.

Despite the disappointing loss, senior Brock Kitchel and junior Chris Roberts posted impressive performances to help offset the team's poor shooting.

Kitchel scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double. Roberts had 11 points and five rebounds. Kitchel shot 7-of-14 from the field and buried a pair of 3-pointers while Robert was 5-of-8 from the floor.

Sheridan shot 35 percent as a team, which fell short of Pioneer's 54 percent. The Panthers had three players reach double figures, led by Samuel Kiser's 14 points.

Sheridan trailed by two points after the first quarter, but head coach Chris Schrank's squad battled back in the second to take a 31-30 lead into halftime.

A seven-point third quarter by Sheridan erased their lead and replaced it with a 42-38 deficit, which put Class A Pioneer (5-3) in control as they finished with 16 points in the final frame.

Jake Chesney added eight points and a pair of assists for Sheridan. Robert Sizemore had five rebounds.

The Blackhawks (3-5, 1-1) host Hoosier Heartland Conference foe Class A Tri-Central (5-3, 0-0) on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
