The Guerin Catholic Golden Eagles came into Friday night’s game as they hosted the West Lafayette Red Devils and thier high powered offense in the second round of the Class 3A Sectinoal 28 tournament.

The Golden Eagles were able to hold their own against the Red Devils all night long as both teams traded the lead and were tied for most of the night.

As in most close games, it usually seems whichever team gets the ball last will win.

That proved to be true as the Red Devils were able to kick what would be the game winning field goal with 1:38 left in the game as they defeated the Golden Eagles by a final score of 34-31.

The Red Devils scored late in the third quarter to make the score 24-16 however the Golden Eagles were able to march down and tie up the game with 8:06 remaining on a touchdown and two point conversion.

Just as it seemed like momentum was on the Golden Eagles side, the Red Devils took the kickoff back for a touchdown to regain momentum and take a 31-24 lead.

Then with 5:23 left in the game the Golden Eagles tied up the game at 31, however they left too much time on the clock for high powered Red Devil offense to march down the field for the final score.

After getting the ball back with just under a minute and a half remaining, the Golden Eagles were unable to tie up the game or even take the lead.

With the win the Red Devils advance to next week’s sectional championship game against Bishop Chatard.

The Golden Eagles meanwhile end their season with a record of 6-5.
