The IHSBCA Preseason No. 1 Fishers Tigers varsity baseball team (3-2) split the second day on their annual Tennessee trip, defeating Shelbyville Central (TN) 8-1 before losing 8-7 to the 2017 State Runner-up Stewarts Creek (TN) on a two-run walkoff home run on their home field.

In Game 1, Mason Thomas (1-0) made his varsity debut on the mound and pitched five brilliant innings. Thomas retired the first 11 batters he faced and finished with six strikeouts, while allowing two base runners on a single and a hit batter. Griffin Rhoads pitched a perfect sixth inning, and Matthew Wolff pitched the seventh, striking out a pair and allowing one unearned run.

As the weather warmed up, the Tigers bats came alive, pounding out 10 hits. Wolff led Fishers at the plate finishing 3-4 with three RBIs. Alex Jamieson hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to dead centerfield. Kiel Brenczewski contributed two hits, and Grant Richardson reached base three times on a single and two walks.

The Tigers continued their hot hitting in Game 2 against the Tennessee state runner-up from a year ago, jumping out to a 5-0 lead through four innings. The Tigers scored two in the first inning when Richardson delivered a two-out double followed by RBI singles from Brenczewski and Wolff. Craig Yoho connected on his second homer of the season, a solo shot in the third. Two batters later, Brenczewski connected on a two-run shot for his second homer in as many days.

Richardson gave Fishers another excellent outing from its starting pitchers, striking out 10 of the 13 outs and allowing just two hits and two walks.

After reaching his 80-pitch limit for his first start, Richardson was removed from the mound in the fifth inning, and Stewarts Creek immediately took the lead with six runs. Jamieson delivered his second homer of the day to tie the score 6-6 in the sixth inning. Richardson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded later in the inning to take a 7-6 lead for the Tigers.

With a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the seventh, Drew Hoffman (0-1) walked the leadoff batter, before he surrendered the game winning walk-off home run.

Fishers returns to action next week when they open Hoosier Crossroads Conference play with a three-game series against Noblesville. The Tigers play at Noblesville on Thursday and Saturday and host the Millers at 6 p.m. Friday.
