Sports Talk With Mark Morrow

Since I started covering Hamilton County sports when I created the Hamilton County Sports Daily website in 2010, and then moved on to write for the

Noblesville Daily Times a few years later, I would like to think I was pretty familiar with our boys basketball talent.

So I thought it would be only fitting to put together an All-Decade team.

Here’s my 25-player All-Decade high school boys basketball team:

The honor team is led by Hamilton Southeastern’s 2012 Mr. Basketball Gary Harris.

The 6-4 Harris was one of the best players playing both ends of the floor. He was silky-smooth on offense, as well as an intimidating presence on defense.

He and teammate Zak Irvin, the 2013 Mr. Basketball, became the first back-to-back Indiana basketball Mr. Basketball recipients to represent the same high school in our state. They were coached by Brian Satterfield, now in his 19th season at HSE and the Dean of Boys basketball coaches in the county.

Harris, who played on two sectional championship teams, averaged 25.5 points 7.7 rebounds and 4.4 steals his senior season. He set career records of 1,552 points and 232 steals.

Harris, who spent two seasons at Michigan State, was selected with the 19th overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft by the Chicago Bulls. He was later traded to the Denver Nuggets on draft night. He’s in his sixth season with the Nuggets.

Zach Gunn, a 2017 graduate and a member of the All-Decade team, became the Royals’ all-time boys scoring leader with 1,657 points.

The All-Decade team also includes four Arthur L. Trester Mental Attitude Award recipients who played on state championship teams: From Class 4A Carmel — Sam Curts (2012), Michael Volovic (2013) and John Michael Mulloy (2019). Class 3A Guerin Catholic — Matt Labus (2015).
